Diagnostic Assessment

A Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, or to identify traits of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a qualified specialist, such as a Diagnostic Assessor. The purpose of the assessment is to determine whether an individual is dyslexic, has dyspraxia or exhibits traits of ADHD and to what extent it impacts their learning, daily functioning, and overall well-being. Assessments for Dyslexia can be conducted from age 9. Assessments for Dyspraxia or traits of ADHD require the individual to be at least 16 years old.

Frequently Asked Questions

A diagnostic assessment is a detailed evaluation used to identify specific learning differences or developmental disorders such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or to identify traits of ADHD. It typically involves a series of tests that assess cognitive abilities, literacy, motor skills, and attention span, depending on the condition being evaluated.

A dyslexia Diagnostic Assessment is designed to evaluate whether an individual is dyslexic. They can be carried out for individuals aged 9 and above. The assessment involves tests for:

  • Cognitive abilities
  • Reading and spelling skills
  • Phonological awareness
  • Memory and processing
  • Writing
  • The results provide a detailed profile of the individual’s strengths and areas of need and recommendations for support.

A diagnostic assessment for traits of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) evaluates an individual’s attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity levels. They can be carried out for individuals aged 16 and above.

A Dyspraxia/Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) assessment focuses on motor coordination difficulties and how they affect daily functioning. They can be carried out for individuals aged 16 and above. This assessment evaluates:

Fine and gross motor skills

Balance and coordination

Organisational and planning skills Like other assessments, it includes cognitive tests and observational tasks

Like other assessments, it includes cognitive tests and observational tasks

Assessments usually take between 2-4 hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the areas being evaluated. Sometimes assessments are broken into multiple sessions to prevent fatigue.

Diagnostic assessments are conducted by specialists such as psychologists and specialist teachers. These professionals are trained to administer specific tests, analyse the results, and provide diagnoses. If a medical diagnosis of ADHD or dyspraxia is needed, then further testing will be necessary.

Post-16 assessments

You will be asked to complete a questionnaire to gather background information. It is also helpful for someone who knows you to complete a questionnaire. This could be a parent, a teacher, or an employer. It’s also helpful to think about key challenges experienced in learning or daily activities. These can be discussed during the assessment.

Pre-16 assessments

If your child is undergoing a diagnostic assessment, you will be asked to complete a background questionnaire to provide important information about their learning and development. It is also beneficial for someone who knows your child well, such as a teacher, to complete a questionnaire to offer additional insight.

Before the assessment, it may be helpful to reflect on any key challenges your child experiences in learning or daily activities. These can be discussed during the session to ensure a thorough evaluation and appropriate recommendations.

During the assessment:

The specialist will conduct a detailed interview to gather background information.

A variety of standardised tests will be administered, depending on the condition being assessed.

Each test will be discussed to gather additional information.

Breaks are offered throughout. It is possible to split the assessment into more than one part.

Yes, diagnostic assessments are available for both children and adults. Many people do not get diagnosed until later in life, and assessments for dyslexia, ADHD, and dyspraxia are common for adults.

After the assessment, a detailed report is produced that outlines:

Information about the background information.

A summary of the results with potential impacts.

Cognitive ability information.

Details about memory, phonological awareness, and processing.

An analysis of reading, spelling and writing.

Scores from each test administered.

The findings from the tests.

Whether a diagnosis of dyslexia, ADHD, or dyspraxia is confirmed.

Recommendations for support, which could include specific strategies, adjustments, equipment, software, or referrals for further assessment.

The results help in:

Understanding specific strengths and difficulties an individual faces.

Accessing support in educational or work settings (e.g., additional time in exams, assistive technology, and adjustments).

Developing strategies to manage difficulties and build on strengths more effectively.

Informing teachers or employers about the individual’s needs.

Yes, diagnostic assessments are confidential. The results are shared only with the individual and any relevant parties they choose (e.g., school, workplace, or medical professionals), with their consent.

In some cases, follow-up appointments are recommended, especially if further support or reassessment is needed. However, most individuals only have one assessment.

The cost of an assessment depends on what is being assessed. A dyslexia-only assessment fee varies depending on whether your assessment is remote or in-person. An assessment that includes additional conditions such as Dyspraxia (DCD) or traits of ADHD will be higher.

It is worth exploring whether your college, university, or workplace can assist with the cost of the assessment, as many institutions and workplaces offer funding support.
